Itchies and Scratchies

'Tis the season for the itchies and scratchies. The causes for these is varied. We see many patients with skin infections, fleas, other parasites and allergies.

The late summer is prime time for flea transmission. The warm summer months allow flea eggs and larvae to survive in the environment, especially in those shady areas under trees and shrubs. The numbers have been building since the last freeze because of wild animals. This increases the chances of your pet becoming exposed. Please keep a flea preventative on your dogs and cats as you do not want to have a flea infestation in your house.

With the warm weather comes pets exposure to grasses, weeds and water. When these damage the skin the protective barrier breaks down. This allows bacteria to set up housekeeping. We see more skin infections and even hot spots in the warm summer months.

The progression of the seasons also means that we are seeing changes in the allergy causing pollens. Our worst season is just around the corner. Ragweed will be blossoming soon. It seems like mid to late August is when it suddenly starts. If your pet has a season that you know is bad, you can talk to us about starting medications ahead of time to prevent the worst symptoms. Severe itchiness from allergies makes pets (and people) extremely miserable.

If your pet suddenly becomes itchy, contact us so we can make them more comfortable as soon as possible.

A Dog's Last Will and Testament
(Author unknown)

Before humans die, they write their last Will & Testament, and give their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I'd ask....

To a poor and lonely stray I'd give:

My happy home.
My bowl, cozy bed, soft pillows and all my toys.
The lap which I loved so much.
The hand that stroked my fur and the sweet voice which spoke my name.
I'd will to the sad scared shelter dog the place I had in my human's heart, of which there seemed no bounds.

So when I die please do not say, "I will never have a pet again, for the loss and pain is more than I can stand." Instead go find an unloved dog; one whose life has held no joy or hope and give MY place to him.

This is the only thing I can give...the love I left behind.

Online Pharmacy Comparison

The prices of medications vary from online suppliers to online suppliers and from veterinary clinic to veterinary clinics. Each business has their own pricing structure. However, if you investigate a bit further you will find that many businesses have very similar pricing for the same goods.

Our business tries to be competitive with our pharmacy competition. In a direct comparison with 1800PetMeds our everyday pricing for HeartGard(R) and Frontline(R) Plus is better. Our price for NexGardTM is significantly lower. Overall, for many items you do not save money by going to an online pharmacy.

You are better off buying from your local veterinary clinic. These purchases help your veterinarian know when you purchase medications to help keep track of needed refills. They also increase your “face time” with the clinic so you and your pet are better known by the doctors and staff. Additionally, buying local returns much of your money to the local economy, not to some giant corporation half a continent away.
